Motherboard MS-6340 VER:1 (erp 0000): Computer stops responding

After working for a few hours, the computer stops responding. Pressing the reset button doesn't work.

I can see bad capacitors (swollen or bulged) on my motherboard.

I'm concerned about the following capacitors:

  • 4x 4700uF/6,3V (swollen/bulged heads)
  • 2x 3900uF/10V (these look good)

The faulty capacitors should be replaced with new ones.

Contact MSI support. They were kind enough to send me new capacitors:

  • 4x 4700uF/6.3V, brand: nichicon
  • 2x 3900uF/10V, brand: TEAPO

You can consider to replace the capacitors yourself following these guidelines or use the repair service.

If you can't get the capacitors through MSI support, here's another place to buy them, e.g. Panasonic EEUFC0J272S. (€ 0.89) or Panasonic EEUFC0J272S (€ 1,20)

Motherboard MS-6340 VER:1 (erp 140): Computer stops responding
I'm having the exact problems with another motherboard, MS-6340 VER:1 (erp 140), VIA VT82C686B chipset. Erp 0000 (this page) has VIA VT86C686A chipset.

Re-inserting netwerkcard seemed to bring the computer to live again.

Put network card in other PCI slot. Put contact spray in all PCI connectors.

Viewing /var/log/messages. Nothing unusual.

Reboot. Stops responding at login prompt.

Reboot. Last messages in /var/log/messages are:

Power supply seems hot. Put back original fan which I had replaced with a more silent one — perhaps running at a speed too low. Computer hangs again. Same eth0 messages.

Removed network card. Hairs and dust sticked to the PCI connector. Cleaned it and put it back in original old PCI slot. Result: no more eth0 messages and computer keeps running for at least 2 hours before shutting down.

Computer stops responding.

Replaced network card RMC RTL8139D 27207S1 236E TAIWAN with network card RMC RTL8139D 38017S1 333E TAIWAN. Reboot. Computer wont start.

Connected computer to grounded socket. Computer wont start.

Am going to swap memory and network card of graphical PC which occassionaly hangs as well.

Put harddisk in K7 550MHz. Runs for two weeks now.

AMD Athlon stops responding. Maybe I should change power supply? Secured power connector. That seemed to do the trick.

Madonna stops responding again.

Secured power connector. Secured graphic card and all PCI cards. Computer still stops responding on cold start. Computer stops responding after trying to mount floppy. On successful boot it says, after trying to mount floppy:

These seem similar problems:

Installed Ubuntu 6.10. Still computer stops responding sometimes.

I don't see ReiserFS warnings anymore: the drive is reformatted with the ext3 filessystem. Instead, this appears to be the last thing reported in /var/log/messages:

Computer stops even at BIOS. Motherboard is MS-6340 Micro-ATX with AMD Athlon 800 MHz processor, socket A (462). Bios:

Perhaps I should try a BIOS upgrade?

Next try. I connected the cdrom as a "slave" to ide0 and set the hard drive to "master". Before the hard drive was connected to ide0 as "cable select" and the cdrom was connected to ide1 as "cable select".
