Problem

After installing Google Earth,

Environment

  • Kubuntu-12.04
  • google-earth-7.0.2.8415, build date 12/13/2012

Workaround

Downgrade to Google Earth v6 (6.0.3.2197) by following these steps:

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth.list'
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install google-earth-stable

This installs google-earth-6.0.3.2197 (Build Date 5/13/2011) with the earth rendered with textures.

Same problem - transparent earth; no satellite images - on Google Earth forum.

The 6.2-download from http://google.com/earth doesn't work: it still downloads the 7.0 version.

When I try to download a v6.2 .deb file manually from Google (http://www.google.com/earth/index.html) I still receive the 7.0 version?

This appears to be caused by a language setting at the bottom of the page, which is set to "Nederlands" in my case. Setting this language to "English (UK)", however, downloads GoogleEarthLinux.bin and upon installing says something about v5.2?:
