Problem

If one "filters", one's goal is to obtain a residue. Does this residue reside before or after, inside or outside the filter?

Maybe that's why the word 'mask' is used?

A distinction is made between filtrate and retentate/residue/filtrand. But it's not clear what your after when you filter.

I came across the word 'cull', which means: "Something picked out from others, especially something rejected because of inferior quality." But from the page Topical Words: Cull it appears the meaning of cull is ambiguous and just a synonym of collect.
